July 2011 JobAnimation.eu Convention
Milan, 6th July 2011, Pirelli Room, Regione Lombardia.
Who are the authors of the animation film today? How much does their concrete involvement in an industrial production count? How do authors and producers relate with each other?

They are some of the questions which gave life to JobAnimation.eu at its start and which were asked to the experts of the animation area taking part in the convention “When a cartoon film is born. The authorship in the animation film” last 6th July.

Promoted by JobAnimation.eu and Lombardy Region, and supported by Cartoon Italia, Asifa Italia and Cartoon Lombardia, the event called the attention of producers, broadcasters, associations of the sector, public organisms and, above all, professionals and experts of the animation film.

The opening speech was up to Alberto Garlandini, Manager of the Cinema Specialized Function of the Lombardy Region, who read a message by President Formigoni, expressing his approval of the initiative.

Evelina Poggi e Monica Rosselli presented the project JobAnimation.eu which, in the early 2009 was meant to interpret the need of an increasing number of European professionals asking for support and tools useful for relating with the producers and the international market at their best.

In July 2009, JobAnimation.eu became a reality with a web portal hosting today the Animation European Community, together with several services supporting the professionals and the small concerns.

The conference showed the increasing demand of communication coming from the animation sector and the importance of the media and the digital platforms meant to diffuse new ideas, present projects and voice the authors.

Agostino Clemente, Cartoon Italia President, explained how the authors and producers should test new languages, formats and media together, in order to make a qualitative leap.
Alfio Bastiancich, Asifa Italia President, pointed out the importance of a choral work of the different artistic and professional roles in a production, reminding the audience of the great number of new talents, also thanks to the work carried out by the training schools of high specialization; whereas Riccardo Trigona, Cartoon Lombardia President, stopped to consider the difficult historical period and the importance of investing in the economic crisis.
Chiara Magri, Animation Course Coordinator of the film institute “Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia”, showed some films of degree, pointing out that the students always receive a global training, considering all the aspects of a production.

The theme of authorship was also treated by some of the broadcasters present at the conference, among whom Gianfranco Noferi from Rai Ragazzi, Daniela Di Noia from Nickelodeon, Fabrizio Margaria from Mediaset and Simona Fabbri from DeA Kids and DeA Super, who announced the opening of De Agostini channels to new projects in development.

It was then the turn of some Italian and European professionals’ experiences.
Robin Lyons, expert in stop motion, showed the difference between authors and talents through two interesting cases of stop motion production, “Igam Ogam”, an original subject, and “Lettice”, taken from a literary work.
From abroad also came new suggestions of trans-national collaborations through the Hungarian animation cases presented by Réka Kálóczy.

The relation between writer and producer was the subject of Paola Mastrocola’s speech; she presented the transposition of her book for children “Che animale sei?” (What animal are you?) into an animated film produced by Gertie and Rai Fiction.
Sergio Basso talked about trans-media with his “Giallo a Milano” (Detective story in Milan), available on the web portal www.corriere.it.
Enrico Caroti Ghelli, writer and musician, showed his “Cricky Freaky”, which took birth from the enthusiastic collaboration of some new talents, and today is followed by JobAnimation.eu and the Roman production company Musicartoon.

The conference also gave space to music, one of the main elements of an animated work, through the speech of Angiolina Gobbi, presenting the composer Antonio D’Ambrosio’s experience.

Finally, Michelangelo Fornaro, one of the new Italian stop motion talents, launched his challenge for a new animated tv series to be realized with this technique, which the Italian industry still considers a new frontier.

In short the conference showed how, to a European industry made of small and medium concerns, should correspond artistic, technical and operational professionals able to stay on the web and put themselves forward in the market.
That is the main goal of JobAnimation.eu.
